A Castle in the Cliffs, Montezuma Castle National Monument

When we left Tuzigoot National Monument we drove about 23 miles over to Montezuma Castle National Monument in Camp Verde, AZ. This castle in the cliffs absolutely thrilled me! I wanted to grab a ladder and climb up and explore this captivating castle. Visitors are not allowed to go anywhere near the site, so I simply wondered at how this ancient structure was built. It’s very high up on the cliff and back when Montezuma was cultivated the Native Americans did not have cranes or forklifts.

By the time we arrived at Montezuma Castle the day had cooled off and we were able to enjoy our time outdoors. While strolling down the loop trail we enjoyed lots of shade from the surrounding sycamore trees. At the monument we lounged on benches to take in this enchanting abode!

The Sinaguas called Montezuma Castle their home. It is an impressive 20 room, 5-story structure assembled into a recess in a white limestone cliff about 70 feet above the ground. In 1933 the pueblo ruin was excavated, uncovering a wealth of artifacts and enhanced history of the cliff dwelling Sinagua people.

At this particular monument there is not a whole lot to do accept walk the loop trail and view the castle. Mom and I learned a great deal about the culture and lifestyle of the people who lived here almost a thousand years ago.

Montezuma Well

A separate part of Montezuma Castle National Monument located several miles northeast. Montezuma Well is a flooded limestone sinkhole about 55 ft deep. It was formed by the collapse of a vast underground cavern. Mom and I arrived to the well right before the park was closing for the day so we were not allowed to hike down into the well. However, we were able to walk around the path surrounding the well and view all sides!

Montezuma Castle National Monument was extremely interesting and a great place to take a break from the Arizona heat and absorb Sinagua Native American history!
